The quake's epicentre was on Venezuela's eastern coast, home to largely poor fishing communities, but was felt as far away as Bogota, Colombia and knocked power out in parts of Trinidad. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said on state television that initial reports showed there were no deaths reported from the tremor. Earlier, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert over the seismic event, saying that "hazardous waves" were possible 300km from the epicentre, but later rescinded the warning.
