VTV.vn - More than 3,350 volunteer programmes, with total funding of nearly 400 billion VND, were implemented in 2023 by the Vietnam Volunteer Community (VNV) — a non-profit charity organisation operating in the social and community sector in Vietnam.

The programmes are among the joint efforts being made by many individuals, associations, groups, and organisations to bring better lives to people nationwide, thus contributing to building a sustainable Vietnam.

The VNV’s programmes cover various fields in society, including gift presentation to disadvantaged people, flood relief, educational support for students, and construction of social houses and schools.

VNV members have also actively participated in blood donation drives, students’ summer volunteer campaigns, and programmes aiming to bring a warm and joyful Tet (Lunar New Year) Festival to the poor.

The organisation’s members have delivered more than 633,700 free meals and 204,600 gifts to disadvantaged children and elderly people living in rural to remote areas across the country, thus contributing to promoting the spirit of love, compassion and sharing in the community.

An annual ceremony has been held since 2017 to honour devoted young people who have made outstanding contributions in volunteer work for the community. The event also aims to praise the volunteer spirit and the dedication of youth in social activities as well as in the cause of national construction and defence.

According to Do Van De, Chairman of the Vietnam Volunteer Community and Head of the Organising Committee, the honouring ceremony in 2023 received the highest the number of nominations and candidates of any edition to date.

Thousands of entrants went through online voting and jury’s assessment in order to select 100 most outstanding individuals and organisations, who were honoured at a ceremony held in Hanoi in January 2024.

Prominent among the honourees at the ceremony was Nham Quang Van, 40, who is head of Rescue Team 116 in Thai Binh Province. In the two years since its launch, the team has provided free rescue activities on rivers and at sea in Thai Binh Province and neighbouring areas.

Each year, the team members also holds free swimming classes to 300-500 students in the locality.

Another outstanding example was Nguyen Huu Thai from Hung Nguyen District, Nghe An Province, who has eight years of experience engaging in charity activities.

Thai and his friends established ‘Hearts of Nghe An Province’ Charity Group in March 2023, which provides free transportation to poor patients both inside and outside the province.

The group has supported more than 230 free ambulance rides for hundreds of disadvantaged patients.

Thai has also actively connected with benefactors to raise funding to support underprivileged circumstances and deliver scholarships to poor students in Ha Tinh Province and Nghe An Province.

“My father passed away when I was a child; by growing up as an orphan, I understand the hardships of life, thus I want to support disadvantaged people,” Thai shared.

“I always hold that every small action, every gesture of kindness, can warm the hearts of those being helped, thereby bringing joy and hope to them in their journey ahead,” he said.

There are many other kind-hearted people and volunteers like Nham Quang Van and Nguyen Huu Thai who have worked dedicatedly and silently to support disadvantaged people in the society, contributing to building a sustainable, safe, happy, and liveable Vietnam.
