HÀ NỘI — More than 17,300 drivers have been fined for drink driving a month after Government Decree 100/NĐ-CP came into effect, according to the Department of Traffic Police under the Ministry of Public Security.
Decree 100/NĐ-CP sets out administrative sanctions for road traffic and rail transport violations.
Under the decree, drunk car drivers can be fined up to VNĐ30-40 million (US$1,300-1,800) instead of the earlier fine of about $800 if tests show that their alcohol content exceeds 80mg per 100ml of blood or 0.4mg per litre of breath.
In addition, their licences will be revoked for 22-24 months compared to just four to six months earlier.
Drunk motorcyclists will face fines of VNĐ6-8 million ($270-360) and their licences will be suspended for 22-24 months.
After a month, total fines collected from violators stood at more than VNĐ53 billion ($2.3 million).
Central Thanh Hóa Province led the list with 970 violators, and then Central Highland province of Đắk Lắk and southern Tây Ninh Province with 914 and 886 violators, respectively. — VNS
