LAI CHÂU — Nineteen shelters illegally built on Hoàng Liên Sơn Pass in the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu were dismantled on Wednesday, Vietnam News Agency has reported.

Trần Văn Sứng, deputy head of the Tam Đường District People’s Committee, said that local residents had built 24 shelters from markers KM 88 to KM 89 on National Highway NO. 4D across Hoàng Liên Sơn Pass to sell goods, posing a danger to vehicles travelling on the route.

Although the owners were asked to remove the shelters before Tuesday, only five of them followed the request. Therefore, the Lai Châu Province Department of Transport and the district authority had to dismantle the shelters.

Hoàng Liên Sơn Pass, also known as Ô Quy Hồ Pass, spans nearly 50km, connecting Lào Cai and Lai Châu provinces. It is famous among tourists and bikers for its breathtaking scenery and impressive bends. — VNS
