For SEA Games 33, held in Thailand, Vietnam sent a  sports delegation of 1,165 members, including 842 athletes, 189 coaches, and 19 experts. After more than 10 days of competition, Vietnam secured 87 gold medals, 81 silver medals, and 110 bronze medals, finishing third overall, behind Thailand and Indonesia.

Experts reviewing Vietnam’s campaign at SEA Games 33  noted that compared to SEA Games 32 in Cambodia, the number of gold medals declined due to the exclusion of several traditional strengths from the competition program, such as finswimming, vovinam, kun bokator, and kun khmer.
