Vietnam wins big at International Olympiad 2017

VTV.vn - Over the past few days, the excellent performances of the Vietnamese teams at the International Olympiad of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics made Vietnam really proud.

The Vietnamese teams' success confirms the country's position in the world education field.

Under the regulations of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)  2017, the benchmark for the gold medal is from 25 points upwards and those for the silver and bronze medals are from 19 points and 16 points, respectively.

Accordingly, Vietnam won four gold medals and the winners are Hoang Huu Quoc Huy (Student at Le Quy Don Gifted High School, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, 35 points); Le Quang Dung (Student at Lam Son Gifted High School, Thanh Hoa province, 28 points); Nguyen Canh Hoang (Student at Phan Boi Chau Gifted High School, Nghe An province, 28 points); Phan Nhat Duy (Student at Ha Tinh Gifted High School, Ha Tinh province, 25 points).

Of them, Hoang Huu Quoc Huy is one of the three students achieving 35 points at the IMO 2017, the perfect score of this year’s event.

At the 48thInternational Physics Olympiad in Indonesia from July 16-24, Vietnamese students won 4 gold and 1 silver medal.

The gold medals went to Dinh Anh Dung of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Ta Ba Dung of the Natural Science Gifted High School under the National University of Hanoi, Nguyen The Quynh of Vo Nguyen Giap Gifted High School in Quang Binh province, and Tran Huu Binh Minh of Phan Boi Chau Gifted High School in Nghe An province. Another 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau Gifted High School, Phan Tuan Linh, won silver.

This year’s competition drew 424 students from 86 countries and territories worldwide. The Vietnamese team finished fifth, after China, South Korea, Russia, and Singapore. This was the highest achievement yet by a Vietnamese physics team.

At the 2017 International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Thailand, Vietnamese students won three gold and one silver medals. This is the best record at an International Chemistry Olympiad.

Accordingly, four Vietnamese students participated in the contest and all of them won the medals.

Three gold medals went to Dinh Quang Hieu, a 12th grader,  Pham Duc Anh, an 11th grader, from High School for Gifted Students - University of Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi; and Nguyen Bang Thanh Lam, a 12th grader from  Amsterdam High School in Hanoi.

Hoang Nghia Tuyen, a 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau Gifted High School in Nghe An province, brought home the silver medal.

With these achievements, the Vietnamese delegation placed second with China, after the US delegation.
