VTV.vn - Vietnam will have 500 kilometers of metro rail in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City combined by 2030.

This will help solve issues related to traffic jams and accidents, environment pollution as well as reduce the burden of the large population in on transportation in these two cities.

Metro rail routes have been shaping up in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City after several years of construction. According to experts, a popular trend in big cities with high resident density is replacing private vehicles with public transport. The metro is the most suitable choice for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city at the moment.

“This type of public transport is an economic solution. It's being used in all mega cities. There's no other kind of public transport that can carry such a large amount of passengers”, said Khuat Viet Hung, who is Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

The metro system will have a capacity of 600 to 800 million passengers. It is expected to change people's habits in using public transport.

“It will take a few years to change people's habits. However, it will help reduce the number of motorbikes and other private vehicles as well as solve the problem of traffic congestion”, said Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong.

In Ho Chi Minh City, 90 out of 172 kilometers of the metro system will be underground. Meanwhile, 20 out of 320 kilometers of metro in Hanoi will be built 15 to 30 meters underground. The rest will be above ground. In the future, all metro routes will be developed to serve the demand of both urban and suburban areas.
