Speaking at the event, Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong underlined the importance of the first general election which took place under universal suffrage 70 years ago, 5 months after the country seized independence.
After 70 years, and13 tenures, the National Assembly has played an important role in country’s constitutional development.
"In recent years, the National Assembly has made progress both in quantity and quality in its legislative activities in order to meet the demands of socio-economic development, improving the life of the people and stabilising political activities of the country. In terms of foreign affairs, the National Assembly has strengthened, promoting the image of Vietnam and its people, as well as enhancing our role and position in the international arena", said Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Looking back on the 70 years, Trong stated the National Assembly was the result of revolutionary will of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh. In his speech, the party leader also pointed out the tasks for the National Assembly in the coming time.
"The National Assembly should be more aware of its vital position and role in the political system of the country, and improve its legislative activities to meet the requirements and aspirations of the people. Including improving the quality of decision-making and ensuring the national interest. Integration should receive more focus in terms of enhancing parliamentary activities", said Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Speaking at the ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung emphasised the ultimate goal of the National Assembly was to represent the needs and rights of every citizen and to help build a more developed economy.
"On behalf of the National Assembly, I express my sincere gratitude to voters for their trust and belief during the past 70 years. It is the empowerment of the people through elections that build a government of the people, by the people, and for the people", said Nguyen Sinh Hung, National Assembly Chairman.
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung believed that the National Assembly would continue to enhance its activities to meet the expectations of Vietnamese citizens in the current period.
