VTV.vn - The Vietnam Women’s Union has launched the ‘Vietnam Ao Dai Week’ to encourage women across the country to wear ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8).

Running from March 1-8, the week-long event aims to raise public awareness of preserving and promoting Vietnamese cultural heritage as well as the people’s pride in the national traditional costume.

The launch ceremony was held in Hanoi on the night of February 29 in combination with an ao dai performance in the presence of Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan.

Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women’s Union Ha Thi Nga emphasised that the ao dai week and ao dai show contributed to honouring the value of ao dai, evoking people’s pride in the traditional costume, as well as promoting the culture, land, and people of Vietnam to international friends.

She noted that the Vietnam Women’s Union hopes to spread meaningful messages about ao dai so that its value will soon be recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage and world cultural heritage.

Vietnamese women, especially Women’s Union members, officials, civil servants, and businesswomen, are encouraged to wear ao dai during the week.

The ao dai performance featured a collection by designer Do Trinh Hoai Nam and more than 50 excellent designers from the “Ao dai design and tailoring” contest, which was jointly held by the Vietnam Women’s Union and designer Do Trinh Hoai Nam.
