Over the past week, the UV Index in the southern city has consistently been rated 8/10, indicating ‘very high’ or ‘extreme’ level of ultra violet radiation under U.N. standards.
Health experts say such UV levels could pose several health risks, including skin cancer. It is forecasted that this year's dry season in the South will have many days of high UV levels and more than ten sunny hours each day. Growing construction density with the use of large cooling systems has thinned the ozone layer, allowing more ultraviolet rays to land.
