VTV.vn - The Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin (VAVA) presented 50 gifts, worth a total of VND57.5 million to AO/Dioxin victims in Bac Lieu province on January 4 on the occasion of the upcoming Tet (lunar New Year) festival.

Speaking at the event, VAVA Chairman, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh said that the gifts were granted to show gratitude to national contributors, who have devoted and sacrificed their lives for national independence, freedom and the people’s happiness.

He stressed that caring for AO/Dioxin victims is the responsibility of the entire political system, social organisations and the whole society.

Statistics have shown that Bac Lieu is now home to more than 10,000 people who have been exposed to toxic chemicals, with only 2,000 of them receiving preferential treatment as Agent Orange victims.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee, Lam Thi Sang, the local authorities have attached great attention to the care of AO/Dioxin victims.

Over the past decade, the provincial association for AO/Dioxin victims have mobilised more than VND12.5 billion to these disadvantaged group. The money has been used to construct houses, present wheelchairs and gifts, and provide health check-ups, and medical care for the victims.
