For the IMO 2020, all participants are joining the contest in their own country as opposed to a host country due to the complicated nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The six Vietnamese students, including a 10th grader, are doing tests at the Vietnam National University in Hanoi. This year’s event marks the first time that the country has sent a 10th grade student to the contest.
Vietnam has participated in the IMO since 1974 when it became the first Asian country to join the competition.
Notable results achieved by the Vietnamese team down the years include being ranked third at the IMO in 1999, 2007, and 2017.
Other significant years include the 2004 version of the IMO when Vietnam claimed four gold and two silver medals, while in 2018 all six Vietnamese students won medals, including one gold, two silvers, and three bronzes.
Last year’s event also saw all of the Vietnamese contestants win medals, including two golds and four silvers.
