Ronaldo scores, misses penalty as Juve win ninth straight title

Juve, in their first season under coach Maurizio Sarri, clinched the title with two games to spare despite a stuttering run in which they won only one out of five matches before Sunday. Juventus have 83 points while Inter, whose coach Antonio Conte led the Turin side to the first three titles of their present run, are on 76 and Atalanta and Lazio have 75 each.

* AS Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout converted two penalties to give them a 2-1 win over his former club Fiorentina as they continued their impressive recent run in Serie A on Sunday. Udinese followed up Thursday's defeat by Juventus by winning 1-0 at Cagliari with a second-minute goal from Stefano Okaka while Torino ensured their survival with a 1-1 draw at home to relegated SPAL.

* Serie A leading scorer Ciro Immobile scored a hat-trick, taking his tally to 34 league goals this season, as Lazio came from behind to thump Verona 5-1 away on Sunday.

* Andre Ayew's superbly-worked goal earned Swansea City a 1-0 victory over Brentford in their Championship playoff semi-final first leg at their Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

* The Houston Dash upset the odds to win their first National Women's Soccer League title on Sunday by beating the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 to capture the Challenge Cup. The NWSL, the first major pro league in North America to return to action amid the COVID-19 outbreak, held the month-long standalone tournament in a "bubble" in Salt Lake City, Utah.

* Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy won the Premier League's Golden Boot award for the top scorer after finishing the season with 23 goals. Vardy was unable to score in Leicester's 2-0 final day loss to Manchester United on Sunday - a result which meant the Foxes missed out on a Champions League place and had to settle for fifth place and the Europa League next season.

* Sheffield United's hopes of finishing eighth in the Premier League standings were dashed when they were beaten 3-1 by Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on the final day of the season on Sunday. The result meant Chris Wilder's Blades finished ninth, still their best ever finish in the Premier League. Southampton, who were in the relegation zone earlier this season, ended their campaign in 11th place.

* Burnley suffered their first home defeat since New Year's Day as they were beaten 2-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday. Burnley finish the season in 10th place on 54 points while Brighton, who had flirted with relegation, conclude in the safety of 15th place.

* Tottenham Hotspur secured a place in the Europa League next season as they closed out their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday. With Palace already safe, despite their slump, it was all about Tottenham's bid to finish in sixth above Wolverhampton Wanderers and guarantee a Europa League spot. Wolves' 2-0 loss at Chelsea ensured a point was enough for Jose Mourinho's side who ended the season on 59 points, above Wolves on goal difference, thanks to a strong finish to a season of upheaval at the club.

* Bologna raced to a two-goal lead in five minutes and were pulled back to 2-2 before a stoppage-time goal form Musa Barrow gave them a 3-2 win over Lecce which pushed their opponents close to relegation in a dramatic Serie A match on Sunday. Lecce, promoted last season, look set to go straight back to Serie B as they remained on 32 points, four below Genoa, the lowest team above the relegation zone, with two matches to play.

* Manchester City wrapped up their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 5-0 home victory over already-relegated Norwich City on Sunday in Spanish midfielder David Silva's final league game for last season's champions. City's goals came from Gabriel Jesus, a Kevin de Bruyne double, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez as they finished the season in second place with 81 points, 18 behind champions Liverpool. Norwich ended bottom of the standings on 21 points.

* Junior Stanislas scored a fine solo goal as Bournemouth fought gallantly but end their five-year stay in the Premier League with an entertaining 3-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. The visitors needed three points to have a chance of survival and played their part in an excellent display. However, Aston Villa's draw at West Ham United sealed the fate of the south coast side, who finished the season with 34 points, one shy of safety.

* Watford were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday but went down fighting in a 3-2 loss at Arsenal, almost clawing their way back from a three-goal deficit largely thanks to former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck. The Hornets' 20th defeat of the season left them second from bottom in the league, meaning they join Norwich City and Bournemouth in dropping down to the Championship when the new season starts on Sep 12.

* Chelsea claimed a Champions League place on Sunday as first-half goals from Mason Mount and Olivier Giroud secured a 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and a fourth-place finish after their final Premier League game of the season. Chelsea ended level on 66 points with Manchester United, who beat Leicester City 2-0 away to secure third place on goal difference and consign the Foxes, who finished fifth on 62 points, to Europe's second-tier Europa League competition.

* Striker Divock Origi scored a rare goal as champions Liverpool came from behind to close out their magnificent Premier League season with a 3-1 win at Newcastle United on Sunday. Liverpool ended the campaign on 99 points, 18 ahead of nearest rivals Manchester City while Newcastle finished 13th on 44 points.

* Spanish side Fuenlabrada's final match that was postponed after several players tested positive for COVID-19 has been officially suspended and will not take place, denying the second division side a shot at promotion, La Liga said on Sunday. Following the last round of matches, Fuenlabrada were left needing a draw to leap back into sixth place and clinch a playoff-promotion berth but La Liga confirmed the final spot will now be awarded to sixth-placed Elche.

* Fabio Quartararo of Petronas Yamaha led from start to finish in the scorching heat of Jerez to win an incident-packed Andalusian MotoGP on Sunday. Frenchman Quartararo, who also won the season-opening Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, cruised to victory from pole position while factory Yamaha duo of Spaniard Maverick Vinales and former champion Valentino Rossi finished second and third.

* World number two Simona Halep has withdrawn from next month's Palermo Ladies Open following Italy's decision to impose a mandatory quarantine for people coming from Romania and Bulgaria amid the coronavirus pandemic, organisers said on Sunday.

* Bayern Munich defender Niklas Suele has fully recovered from torn cruciate ligaments as his team chase a treble of titles, coach Hansi Flick said on Sunday. Germany international Suele suffered the injury in October and has not played since.

* Anton Hudaev, the Ukrainian national team's doctor, has died from the novel coronavirus at the age of 48, the domestic football association said.

* Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur has decided to sit out the rest of 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic after becoming a mother last month but the 36-year-old Australian has vowed to return to court next year.
