VTV.vn - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked local authorities in coastal provinces and cities to make stronger efforts to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The request was made during a virtual conference on September 7 on measures to remove the yellow card issued by the EU to Vietnam.

He noted that the grass-roots authorities must be responsible for communicating with, instructing, and encouraging local fishermen to refrain from illegal practices.

The head of government added that having the yellow card lifted by the European Commission as soon as possible is a must for Vietnam’s seafood industry to develop in the right direction.

At the conference, coastal provinces and cities briefed the Prime Minister on their efforts, with a focus on raising public awareness and using technology to enhance the management of fishing vessels.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, there has been improvement in the installation of the vessel monitoring system on fishing boats with a length of 15 metres or greater.

As of August 31, tracking devices have been installed on 90.26% of the total of more than 30,600 vessels.
