The study found that wealthy countries, which make up only about 14% of the global population, have pre-ordered more than half of the expected doses of the vaccine which will be provided by the top 13 manufacturers next year.
To ensure that people around the world, regardless of wealth, have access to vaccines, many countries have joined a pooled purchasing mechanism for COVAX on a global scale with the hope that by the end of 2021 there will be 2 billion doses of vaccine to distribute. The two countries that have approved the vaccines, the US and Russia, have not participated.
