VTV.vn - A cold spell continued strengthening in the northern region, with temperatures reaching as low as 12-15C in the plains, 9-12C in mountainous region and below 8C in the high mountains, according to the national weather forecast agency.

The cold spell will affect the north-eastern, north central, northwest and central regions.

Due to the influence of cold air, tonight there will be light rain in the northern region as well as Thanh Hoa province, while showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Nghe An to Khanh Hoa provinces tomorrow on December 14.

A strong cold air is forecast to affect the northern region on December 16-17.

Also, in mid-December, a tropical cyclone is likely to appear off the coast of the Philippines, potentially forming a tropical depression and storm, which is projected to move into the southern provinces of Vietnam. This is a special natural disaster occurring in the last month of the year, according to the national weather forecasting agency.

The weather forecasting agency said that this year's winter came relatively early, with cold spells from the beginning of the season in November. The average temperature in November was 0.5 – 1C lower than the same month of the previous years, while the temperature in the first ten days of December was also lower than in the same period of past years by approximately 2-3C.
