National week for disaster prevention and control launched

VTV.vn - The national week for natural disaster prevention and control was officially launched in the northern port city of Hai Phong on May 14.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung and over 1,000 representatives from 21 cities and provinces. The week aims to raise public awareness of the efforts to build a society that's resilient to natural disasters.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said that disaster risk reduction in Vietnam is an urgent issue / that needs to be addressed. He asked ministries and localities to be more active in preventing disasters and climate change.

On average, disasters cause 300 deaths and missing people per year, and economic losses of around 1.5% of the GDP.
