VTV.vn - Vietnam’s national weather agency has issued a warning of heavy rains for northern provinces as typhoon Higos made landfall in southern China’s Guangdong Province.

The storm is forecast to move in the west-northwest direction at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour in the next 24 hours and will weaken to a tropical depression and then a low-pressure area.

Over the next three days, Vietnam’s northeast region is expected to experience heavy rains, with typical amounts of 50-150mm, while the northwest region will be battered with rainfall of 100-200mm, even up to 250mm in some places.

The amount of rain in the Red River Delta and Thanh Hoa Province is projected to reach 40-80mm.

Mountainous provinces in northern Vietnam were already reeling from heavy rains and landslides prior to the arrival of Higos, disrupting traffic, cutting off electricity and damaging crops.

The national weather service has issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for the provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang and Thanh Hoa.

Meanwhile lowland and riverside cities and regions will face the threat of localised flooding.
