ith the capability to produce 400 tons of salmon annually, the absence of tourists in Sapa has sometimes caused a salmon backlog to reach 250 tons.
As salmon will die soon after laying eggs, it has to be sold immediately. This has led to many households selling salmon at a low price, but still being unable to clear their backlog.
Some have turned to drying, making flakes and pa-te, smoking, freezing salmon and even calling for salmon rescue on Facebook, but still are not able to earn as much.
