VTV.vn - Nearly a third of the world's countries lack fresh water. This number will increase to two-third by 2025, equivalent to 35% of the world's population live in severe water shortages.

Spokespeople from international research institutions made these assessments at the fifth International conference and exhibition on managing transboundary waters, which was held in Hanoi.

Water shortages are a serious problem threatening the sustainable development of countries. Climate change has made this resource increasingly depleted, degraded and difficult to control.

The conference, which saw the attendance of 20 countries and territories prioritised how to implement solutions to manage, share and efficiently use water supplies.

From international agreements, the Mekong River Commission, which includes Vietnam, is making efforts to strengthen international co-operation to protect water resources across countries, from upstream to downstream.
