The event was co-organised by Ministry of Labour, War Veterans and Social Affairs (MoLIS), Defence Ministry, Ministry of Public Security, Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper and Can Tho municipal People’s Committee to mark the 69th anniversary of War Veterans and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947-2016).
This year’s conference honoured 299 outstanding war veterans, heroic Vietnamese mothers, Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, ex-youth volunteers, and relatives of martyrs and revolutionary contributors representing more than 8.8 million national contributors around the country.
Addressing the conference, on behalf of the Party, State and Government, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his profound gratitude as well as conveyed his wish for good health to revolutionary veterans, Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, wounded and sick soldiers, martyrs’ relatives and revolutionary contributors.
He said that the honourees are examples of the extraordinary will and energy as well as persistent efforts and strides to overcome all difficulties to contribute to the nation.
The PM affirmed that, despite many difficulties, the Party and State have always payed much attention to directing the implementation of the gratitude work to national contributors.
He also asked the central ministries, branches and localities to continue to complete preferential policies supporting contributors to the nation.
The Party Committee and government at all levels should continue to direct the implementation of policies related to national contributors, as well as focus on commending revolutionary achievements, particularly the award of the title ‘Heroic Vietnamese Mothers’, noted the PM.
He asked urged the acceleration of the search, collection and identification of martyrs’ remains, as well as creating the most favourable conditions for martyrs’ families to pay tribute at cemeteries.
The PM asked the branches and localities to enhance the education of patriotism, revolutionary ideals and gratitude among younger generations.
Expressing his admiration and appreciation of the delegates’ stories at the conference, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc hoped that national contributors would continue to uphold the revolutionary spirit and act as a positive example for younger generations to follow.
On the same day, visiting officials and soldiers of Military Zone 9 in the city, the PM asked them to improve the efficiency of training and fighting, mastering equipment and weapons, and ensuring national security and defence, particularly in the Mekong Delta region and the country’s southwestern islands.
