Cannes film festival opens

Guests at the gala event first walked the red carpet for the premiere of festival's opening film "Everybody Knows" by Iranian director Asghar and starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. This year, the jury includes French actress Lea Seydoux and American actress Kristen Stewart, and is headed by Australian actress Cate Blanchett. The festival runs from May 8 to May 19 and features 21 films in the main competition and a slew of others that are vying for other prizes.
