VTV.vn - The southern province of Binh Duong should become a role model in development and prosperity not only for Vietnam but also the entire ASEAN Economic Community.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was speaking this at a meeting on the first day of the New Year (January 1) to celebrate Binh Duong’s 20 years of re-establishment.

Phuc noted that the province needs to surpass the set socio-economic development targets for the coming years to achieve this goal.

“There should be more incentives to encourage healthy competition among localities. Binh Duong should continue to be the driving force for the southeastern region and the country, and further integrate into the global production network and value chain," said PM Phuc.

The government leader also urged for economic restructuring, reform of the development model and improvements in the local competitiveness. He suggested that Binh Duong take the lead in the provincial competitiveness index and develop and attract high-quality human resources.

Phuc said he hopes that Binh Duong will become a startup centre of the region and the country in the time to come and asked Binh Duong to set up 50,000 enterprises by 2020, doubling the current figure.

In 2016, the locality’s total gross regional domestic products increased 8.5%, and currently, industry makes up 63% of its economic structure.

The same day, PM Phuc attended a ceremony to mark 20 years of Binh Duong’s development, during which he presented the Independence Order, first class, to the Party Organisation, government and people of Binh Duong in recognition of their achievements in national construction and development.
