Babylon named as UNESCO world heritage site
VTV.vn - Iraq has been lobbying for the 4,000-year-old site to be added to the United Nations' prestigious list since 1983.

Iraqi officials have stated that Babylon was the most populous city in ancient history and had a flourishing civilization.

Being on the list of world heritage sites will encourage researchers and tourists to visit the city. Babylon, which is located about 85 kilometers south of Baghdad, was once the center of a sprawling empire. The city was famous for its Hanging Gardens, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Iraqi government has said that it would allocate funds for conservation.
