Australia plans to tighten laws for social media firms

The Australian parliament passed the new Criminal Code Amendment Bill on Thursday which will then go to the House of Representatives on Friday.

The new laws make it illegal for social media firms not to remove footage of 'a terrorist act', murder, torture, rape and kidnapping.

The law also requires social media firms, regardless of their location, to notify the Australian Federal Police if they become aware that their service is streaming violent conduct that is happening in Australia.
