The formation and development of ASEAN was a huge facilitator in regional co-operation. The association is also a vital partner for other countries in the world and plays an important role in building of the Asia-Pacific region.
ASEAN represents a milestone of co-operation and mutual development over its 49 year history. From only 5 original members, ASEAN has now become a strong association with 10 regional member countries, home to more than 630 million people and the 6th largest economy in the world.
For nearly half a century, ASEAN has continued to expand co-operation with countries outside the region through mechanisms such as ASEAN+1, ASEAN+3, East Asia Summit, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The association also pushed for promoted co-operation with member countries, evident through the formation of the ASEAN Community in December 2015.
The way forward for the ASEAN community was confirmed through the ASEAN Vision 2025 and Turning Vision into Reality for a Dynamic ASEAN Community plan. These plans are hoped to facilitate an integrated association based on politics, economics and social responsibility.
Amid tensions and potential risks in the region’s economic, political, security and other areas, ASEAN is showing its determination to strengthen solidarity and unity with member countries and strengthen relations with its partners. This is expected to enhance the prestige and influence of ASEAN in the global arena and contributes in ensuring peace, stability and prosperity of the region.
