Ngoc Linh ginseng promoted as national brand

VTV.vn - The government recently approved a scheme to preserve and develop Quang Nam Province’s Ngoc Linh ginseng to become a national brand in 2030.

The province’s Nam Tra My District will expand the area devoted to ginseng to 30,000 hectares with total capital of 400 million US dollars. And the first steps of this scheme have been carried out by local authorities, yielding some encouraging results.

150,000 native young ginseng plants are have just been propagated in Ngoc Linh Ginseng Development Centre of Quang Nam Province. And soon, they will be sent to grow in local households. This process will make sure local production uses a unique and well-bred variety.

Beside propagation by seeds, ginseng farms in the province are applying other propagation methods such as tissue culture to increase productivity. In addition, the local authority has requested the local health department to expand incubator area and increase supplies for farmers.

Quang Nam Province has around 100 hectares devoted to growing ginseng, most of which used by household farms. Due to high demand, farmers usually harvest the ginseng before they yield seeds. This is the reason for the shortage of ginseng seeds. Facing this situation, the local authority has carried out some specific measures.

Quang Nam’s Nam Tra My District is one of Vietnam’s 30 poorest districts. So the scheme to develop Ngoc Linh ginseng as a national brand is expected to protect a rare variety of ginseng and boost the socio-economic development of this poor province.
