VTV.vn - The central province of Quang Tri has been piloting the growing of several drought-tolerant plants. These models have shown good initial results, bringing benefits to local farmers.

This one hectare area in Cam Lộ District used to be used for rice growing, earning around 2 thousand USD per year. Now, local farmers have switched to peanuts growing. This has seen revenue spike to 6,700 USD a year. Local farmers have also carried out new models including growing grass for cow feed and medicinal plants.

Nguyen Van Thanh, Vice Chairman of People’s Committee, Cam Lo Dist., Quang Tri Province said: “Over the past time, we focused on directing farmers to switch to drought- tolerant plants. As of now, we have switched 200 to 300 hectares of land. We’ll continue investing in high-value crops in the coming time”.

In order to multiply this model in the province, joint effort among authorioties at all level is needed.

Vo Van Hung, Director of Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, Quang Tri Province said: “We think that local authorities need to be innovative in planning the types of crops that suit the local conditions”.

According to Quang Tri’s agricultural department, 40 thousand hectares of land in the province is to be switched to other crops in the coming summer-autumn season. New models in Cam Lộ are encouraged to be multiplied throughout the province in response to the impact already felt due to climate change.
