VTV.vn - 200 thousand networks in at least 150 countries have fallen victim to an unprecedented number of global cyberattacks that occurred last Friday May 12.

The European Police Agency (Europol) warned that the number of victims may continue to rise sharply today, as a new week begins. Vietnam is in the top 20 most affected countries aside from Russia, Ukraine, India, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, China, and Romania. According to Reuters, the hackers' attack was quite simple. They tricked victims into opening malicious attachments in the form of invoices, job referrals, security alerts, and other seemingly "legitimate" files. After infiltrating victims' computers, the hackers' programs gain access, encrypting data on the computer and then using it to "extort" anywhere from US$300 to 6500 from their victims.
