Recently, local farmers have switched to growing wild eggplants, a medicinal herb that can cure many diseases including liver diseases. The results are surprising, and it has opened up a new way to eradicate poverty in the region.
This is the wild eggplant grown by Phan Van Tien, a farmer in Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province. His three hectares of wild eggplant garden has generated an income of 20,000 USD per year for his family. This income is much higher than could be achieved by rice cultivation.
"I have been researching the effects of wild eggplant for several years. Quang Binh Province has the perfect conditions for wild eggplant cultivation. This plant is very good for the liver", said Phan Van Tien - a farmer in Phuc Trach Commune, Quang Binh Prov.
Local farmers usually grow acacia. However, this plant does not generate high economic value like wild eggplant. Growing wild eggplants can generate income five to six times higher than traditional crops.
"We have provided technical support for farmers and guarantee a stable outlet for farmers. This is a new way to eradicate poverty in this region", said Nguyen Thanh Vinh - Head of Agriculture Support Center of Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Prov.
Due to the high demand for wild eggplant, Tien has connected with a pharmaceutical company to guarantee a stable outlet. In the coming time, Tien will work with other local farmers to expand the plantation area for wild eggplant.
