He said at a press conference that he would prioritise stabilising the economy and return billions of dollars lost in a graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
He added that some of Malaysia's debt was "too big" and needed to be renegotiated. The 92-year-old prime minister also promised to review an anti-fake news law that was hastily passed through the parliament before it was dissolved.
