VTV.vn - An international workshop on Pan-Pacific Blue Shipping kicked off in Hai Phong on April 17th.

The event was intended to develop a national action plan on responsible maritime transport. Participants discussed potential threats caused by maritime activities as well as measures to cope with those issues.

The workshop focused on potential threats caused by maritime activities in the Pacific region. The discussion drew the attention of international academics and specialists.

Eighty percent of world commodities is transported by sea. The Pan-Pacific route is one of the two global major maritime routes. With increasing traffic density, maritime activities have had an influence on the marine environment in the area.

“It is an area rich in natural resources. It has great potential but at the same time is vulnerable and needs to be protected. Therefore, maritime activities, besides their economic benefits, can have negative impacts on the environment”, Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi who is the Chairman of Vietnam Association of Maritime Environment & Nature said.

At the workshop, academics also shared experience and practical solutions to deal with environmental issues in the Pan Pacific region.
