HCMC's hogs & chickens' origins officially traced

VTV.vn - After 6 months of implementation of a project to identify and trace the origin of hogs, over 1,300 slaughter houses from 16 southern provinces have registered to participate in product traceability.

Despite this, many hiccups have been reported in the implementation. In order for people to be fully assured of the origins of their food, Ho Chi Minh City will officially control the origins of pork and chicken starting July.

Starting Sunday, HCM City plans to manage and trace the origin of poultry and eggs. It is expected that by September, the origins of all poultry and eggs entering the city's market will be recorded. Unlike the tracking of the origin of pork, which begins at farms and ends with consumers, this project will be tracing the origins of poultry at the breeding level.

Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, Vice director of HCMC department of industry and trade, said: “The new point of origin of poultry will be stamped from the packaging stage. Unlike pork, retailers cut the meat according to the buyer's request and then stamp the product”.

Representatives of the Department of Industry and Trade in Ho Chi Minh City said that starting July 31st, 100% of pork imported to HCMC must be traced through two wholesale markets: Hóc Môn and Bình Điền. Pigs from other provinces must be marked with traceability bands.

To facilitate livestock farmers participation in the scheme, HCMC has provided 50% -100% of the cost for hog farmers for 3 to 6 months. This is one of the solutions to ensure a safe food source for consumers, which aims to build a clean and safe production line for all producers.
