Co-operatives in sustainable development
VTV.vn - The 10th Asia-Pacific Co-operative Ministers' Conference opened in Hanoi yesterday. The event is expected to address challenges and emerging issues of co-operative development.

The theme of the conference, focused on the role of co-operatives in sustainable development, was of interest to many of the delegates.

Presentations on the role of co-operatives in food production, sustainable development or informal labour and co-operatives were just some of the topics covered. . These underlined the role of co-operatives in achieving the goal of sustainable development. The issue of sustainable poverty reduction was also of interest.

Experience in other countries shows that the role of co-operatives in developing rural economies is vital in the promotion of sustainable development. Farmers can increase their agricultural value through co-operatives.

In the context of integration, the role of co-operatives with farmers, agriculture and rural areas is very important. If production is leave to dependent on individual small-scale farmers, they will not meet the needs of international integration since international markets requires quantity, quality and geographical indications, which individual farmers rarely are able to meet. These are issues that need communication so that farmers are aware and participate in the co-operative model.

Through a co-operative model that provides uniform seedlings, applies the same technology, and unifies the product sold on the market, cooperative alliances in Vietnam, as well as countries in the Asia-Pacific region are helping farmers participating in the producing goods value chain to meet the market demands, thereby increasing their incomes and promoting sustainable development.
