VTV.vn - Air travellers have been surprised by a reduction in the number of flights and surges in airfares in recent days.

Prices are double or triple compared with the same period last year although it is not peak travel season. The strongest rises can be seen in the prices of flights on the Hanoi - HCMC route.

Tickets normally cost up to 88 USD if booked two days in advance, but now prices have gone up to 128 to 154 USD. The spike has been blamed on a wide range of Jetstar flights being cancelled. Travellers have had to switch to Vietnam Airlines, which led to overloading.

In addition, Vietjet Air also reduced its flights on the Hanoi - HCMC route, from 20 to 25 a day down to just 10 per day.
